Small Daily Habits That Boost Mental Health
It was yesterday after a long day of studying that I finally went outside and felt the nice rising temperatures that have come to surprise us after some very cold weeks. As I walked, I noticed how seeing the sun and feeling some of its warmth brought a smile to my face. I thought that spring must be around the corner, and it is my favorite season! You may ask why I am writing about the weather, and it’s because going outside is one daily habit of mine that always makes me a little bit happier! In other words, it gives a little boost to my mental health.
How do daily habits boost our mental health? If you have a small habit like going outside to walk for 30 minutes every day after work, it gives you a predictable routine while also decreasing your stress. It is something you do to benefit yourself, your mental health, your happiness, and your overall well-being.
Here are some daily habits you can choose to do:
Movement - It can be a great stress reliever and there are many different forms of movement. You may like playing a sport, dancing, yoga, walking in your neighborhood, etc.
Nature/light exposure - Take some time to reconnect with the nature around you and you can even try mindfulness techniques of grounding yourself in the present moment by sensing what is around you which can decrease anxiety.
Gratitude - name 3 things you are grateful for every day (helps shift to positive thinking rather than negative thinking + a positive mood)
Social connection - *fights isolation! Humans are social creatures, so reach out to someone you care about or want to reconnect with. Sending a text, calling, or setting up a meeting can help you feel connected and happier.
Do something that brings you joy! - this should be pretty straightforward, if doing something specific makes you happy, do it more often! (For me, it is as simple as eating a good meal or a yummy chocolate chip cookie!).
*This is a non-exhaustive list! Be creative and find out what works best for you or what you can change/add!
I don’t believe there’s anyone who doesn’t want a positive sense of wellbeing, and implementing manageable daily habits that actively boost your mood can help with the goal of happiness. Remember, we have control and the resources in ourselves to create a difference and reach our desired goals even if sometimes it may not seem like it or we may forget. At times I may forget the small things that can boost my mood, but we can always be reminded. Just as I was reminded of how much I love the warmth the sun brings when I felt it yesterday, I was also reminded to make sure to enjoy the moments that make me happy. Until next time!
